Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others.

Black (not African-American) Humor

Facing the end of the great experiment called the United States of America with a little panache requires some humor. Considering the situation, belly laughs are probably inappropriate, but a little black humor - redolent with the fragrance of cynicism - might be in order.

I just came across a web site called "Yer Ol' Woodpile Report" by ol' Remus (h/t to Colonel Bunny at Washington Rebel). In it, ol' Remus writes of some future press releases from the ACLU that tickled my funny bone.

Chicago is probably the front runner in the respect they already pay to the rights of those who have gone before us, both the recently dead and those who have moldered in the grave for many years - especially their right to vote.

California and Massachusetts have been trying for years to insure that creatures unrecognizable by the rest of us as normal human beings can enjoy the right to plumb each others most nether regions, consume each others waste, and shower beneath the colorful effluent of their partner's kidneys, sanctified by marriage*, as well as the right of people of all religions (as long as your religion happens to be the Religion of Peace. Other religions need not apply) to decide not only what age is acceptable for sexual activity (see "Islam - Poking Fun At Babies"), but what species are acceptable (again, see "Islam - Camels and Goats and Beardless Boys, Oh My").

Finally, a long-neglected segment of society requires the freedom to worship their ancestors and the freshly deceased in the same fashion as the rest of us enjoy in both the heterosexual and homosexual fashions, but have been deprived of for so many years (with the possible exceptions of undertakers, medical examiners, and a few of the guys over in Graves Registration).

Ol' Remus says the ACLU is moving to secure these rights nationwide:

Actuarial Equality

Many Americans are born dead, even more die within their lifetime, yet the deceased are far too often treated as second class citizens, shunned and segregated by physical barriers and social stereotypes. They are discriminated against in employment, schools and housing, robbed of their personal autonomy, sometimes even hidden away and forgotten by the larger society. By and large, the dead continue to be excluded from the American dream. The ACLU continues to fight for the civil rights of the deceased under the Really Severely Disabled Americans Act.

Trans Species Rights

The ACLU is proud to join with PETA to defend demand full marriage rights for people wishing to partner with pets, farm animals or microorganisms. Sharing life with another species, understanding and accepting yourself, being able to work, to build a herd or covey, and to be a valued member of society are all essential parts of human life. Relationships, parenting, species identity, schools, job discrimination: full equality in each of these things is an important goal.

Necrophilian Rights

For much of American history, indeed, for much of world history, necrophilia has been a taboo subject. Often, it has been considered a crime in itself. Yet today, millions of necrophilian Americans are not only open about their sexuality, they are campaigning for new laws which they say would grant them the same rights accorded to other differently-oriented people, including protection against discrimination at the scenes of fatal accidents and the right to practice their alternative lifestyle in the military at the front lines of active combat. The ACLU is at the forefront of the Give Me Liberty And Give Me Death movement.

Joining ACLU in working dilligently to secure these rights for our citizens is the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), whose central figures - Morris Dees, Joseph R. Levin, Jr. and J. Richard Cohen (aren't these the guys that wrote "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy" aka The Yankee Doodle Boy?) - are the poster boys for the groups who wish to exercise all three of these rights. If my information is correct, they have been practicing them on each other for some time now.

* I have to admit I am not a homophobe (I don't fear gays, and even grrrls don't make me cry, unless they get up on their hind legs and bark along with those big dogs on the porch - then they scare the pants off me ;-), nor do I hate them (couldn't find an antonym for -philia, Greek for "like" or "love". "Phobia" means "fear", which isn't applicable.) I simply find some of their practices - and those who practice them - completely disgusting and without any socially redeemable value. I hope my gay friends forgive me, but they already knew I was weird.

Forget Allen West - another betrayal

Betrayal. Sounds pretty harsh, doesn't it? Unfortunately, it applies quite properly to Allen West's failure to stand by his campaign rhetoric when he was trying to get elected to his current office in the House.

I was hopeful that Mr. West would step forward and become a viable candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, but I see I was ignorant of who he really is: another politician who will say anything he has to in order to get elected, but who will then betray the very principles he claims he holds when it is time to stand up and be counted. In a recent speech to the Young America's Foundation, he claimed that voting against the sorry compromise put forth by Boehner (in order to satisfy the Democrats) had no purpose. "If I had voted no, what would I have been voting for? And they couldn’t answer that.”

West tries to pretend there was no reason to vote against it, sounding like the Democrats when they stated that the Republicans (including the Tea Party which elected West, but he now repudiates) don't have a reason, they simply don't want to let the Democrats do what "needs" to be done. West is lying, as the Tea Party elements trying to stop the damaging compromise did have a purpose, a reason - a reason they stated quite clearly: to stop the spending that is bankrupting this country. The same reason they stated during the 2010 midterm elections (which West agreed to at that time): stop the growth of government. Stop the needless and harmful spending. Return the power to the people of this country, instead of the politicians who currently wield it.

West is a sellout, or a fraud. He has either abandoned the principles he claimed to hold when he ran for office, or he has joined the other side. Here is a post on another blog that shows the betrayal West is guilty of:

31 JULY 2011

Oh, Colonel...really?

Commenter "Grandpa" at iOTW sums up the recent actions of Allen West. To say I'm disappointed is on the level of saying that outer space is slightly chilly.

FACT: Congressional bill #1 in 2011 was a vote to defund Obamacare. Allen West did not support it and voted NO.

FACT: Allen West voted to continue FUNDING for the fraud that is Pigford. [Editor: i.e. he voted for race, not reason.]

FACT: Rep Kings Bill to defund the Libyan war and call Obama to task on his violation of the war powers act. Allen

West voted no. He voted to fund Obama’s war.

FACT: Allen West disparaged, the Tea Party with name calling. Sure he twisted himself in knots saying people

misunderstood. But I heard him. There was no misunderstanding.

FACT: Allen West voted to support the raising of the Debt Ceiling. A specific platform plank he used as a talking

point in his election effort at 36 different venues in speeches. He promised on 36 different public occasions to vote

AGAINST raising the debt limit and borrow more money.

Principles matter, perhaps not to progressives who are comfy in the land of hypocrisy and lies, but a conservative,

a real patriot, should never be comfy there or even know where the flippin place is. It shouldn’t even be on their

map.

"Steadfast and loyal," Col. West? Really? You were elected to take a stand against the Obama regime, sir. Remember?

What happened to that?

I need a drink. Make that several. :( (h/t Wraith)

He is a politician, just like Obama. Makes claims to become elected that he abandons once he has won the prize he sought. I promise you he would do the same in any attempt to become President. Forget Allen West as a candidate for any further office.

The Essential Rules Of Liberty

This blog is dedicated to my father, and his part in the fight for maintaining liberty throughout the world, by flying B-17s over Germany during WWII and then B-52s during the Cold War for the Strategic Air Command. In my header, I write that Americans need to regain their liberty - much of which has been stolen from us (flown on a commercial airline lately?) - before it is completely gone.

Thanks to Pete at WRSA, I will post the writing of Brandon Smith at Alt-Market.com. He wrote "The Essential Rules of Liberty", and what he wrote rings very true for me. I hope it does for you, as well:

There is nothing worse in this world than an enslaved man who naively believes himself free, except, perhaps, trying to explain to that same man his predicament. You can lay truth after truth before his feet. You can qualify your every position with cold hard irrefutable data. You can plead and scream and raise veritable hell, but before he will ever listen, he must first become aware of his own dire circumstances. As long as he views himself as “safe and secure”, as long as he imagines his chains to be wings, he will see no reason to question the validity of the world around him, and he will certainly never invest himself into changing his own deluded destiny.

Unfortunately, there are many such men crawling and scraping about here in what was once a land graced with a self sufficient and independently minded public majority. The great lie that has been perpetuated in this country over the past several decades is that we can defer our responsibilities of vigilance and place our well being and our futures into the hands of others for the sake of “collective efficiency”, or leisure. We have been conditioned to live in a state of constant indifference, a society which prizes compromise over principle and steadfast resolve. Those who refuse to compromise that which is honorable for the sake of ease and comfort are indicted as “extremist” or even criminal. The idea of personal revolution is treated with discomfort, and all we claim to stand for becomes muddled in a fog of inaction and cynicism. As Americans, we have forgotten what it means to earn and protect our own freedoms. We have forgotten that in liberty, there are standards that must be defended.

This, however, does not mean we cannot yet again remember ourselves. The desire for freedom is as inborn and natural as our own heartbeat, as our own breath. It is instinct. It cannot be erased from within, only oppressed from without. The tide has always been against tyranny, always, though we may find that hard to believe. If liberty was not ingrained into our very DNA, humanity would have succumbed to bondage and self destructed long ago. This is not the case.Stretching under the surface of our superficial force-fed mainstream culture are the roots of something real, and honest. Simmering beneath our so called “civilized” veneer, many Americans are finally rediscovering their wild and defiant origins. In the recent past we have been taught to feel ashamed of our rebelliousness. Now, we are learning to hold it quite dear.

For those of us who are awake, and for those who are on the verge of understanding, certain rules come into play that strengthen our stance and shield us from folly. Liberty is not a self perpetuating social condition. It requires guidelines, and effort, and sacrifice. Liberty will not survive without our willingness to maintain it. If you are not ready and willing to fight for your own independence, then you are not truly free.

Let’s examine some of the inherent laws and guidelines of free will and free action that will allow us to not only win back our self determination, but to keep it for generations to come. You want liberty? This is what it takes…

Rule #1: Never Take Anything For Granted

A lot of people today seem to have serious issues with expectation and assumption; what we in the alternative media often refer to as “normalcy bias”. We have grown used to the idea of abundance and relative safety. So much so, that we fail to notice when our abundance and safety begin to disappear. We assume that the condition of the world today will be the condition of the world tomorrow, and for all time. In the U.S., we have even come to expect not only that our prosperity and our freedom are inevitable, but that they will also increase exponentially with each passing generation. This is a relatively new and narrow cultural mindset likely caused by the explosion in industrial growth after WWII which seemed to erase all memory of the Great Depression in our society, leaving us with the belief that surely, our circumstances would never become so desperate again.

Those who are truly independent realize that nations, no matter how affluent, can self destruct at a moment’s notice, especially when they fail to recognize their own weaknesses and confront their own demons. Never suppose that that which is good and just will remain without your own initiative. Never wait for others to fix those problems which you could just as easily solve yourself. Never expect that freedoms won cannot also be easily lost. Always prepare for the worst outcome, and strive for the best outcome.

Rule #2: Educate Yourself

Never become a useful idiot, or a waste of oxygen. Being a part of the herd is nothing to be proud of. Strive for knowledge, and thirst for the truth every moment of every day. Many of the things we deem “important” in modern society are in the grand scheme hollow attempts to fill our lives with distraction, only wasting time until we finally bite the dust filled with regret. Pretending to further the depth of one’s life is not the same as actually doing so. I can’t think of anything more horrifying than becoming a man who rushes around frantically every waking moment, but ultimately accomplishes nothing.

Do not assume that you already have a tangible grasp of the truth, especially if all your knowledge has been handed to you. Instead, research that knowledge for yourself. Put that which you have been taught to the test. Only in this way will you finally learn. Expand your horizons. Learn something useful. Remove unnecessary distractions for at least part of your day and focus on increasing your awareness of the environment you live in. There are very few things in this world more important than this, and self education should take precedence over everything else except your family. “Lack of time” is no excuse for ignorance. Make time! The ignorant are led. The knowledgeable lead themselves.

Rule #3: Don’t Be A Pansy

Liberty is not for the faint of heart. Emotional courage is paramount to freedom, and it can be expressed to incredible effect by even the most unlikely heroes. I’ve seen children with more courage and tenacity than some full grown men.

If one recognizes the gravity of the situation we face as a people, if one understands the considerable danger involved in the fall of a Republic to the depths of fear and autocracy, but still does nothing, that person has not only failed the world, he has also failed himself. “Making waves”, or drawing the ire of “authority”, is the least of our worries. If you have utilized an objective eye, and know you are right in your position, then there is no reason to fear criticism from anyone.

Sociopolitical action, nonconformity, noncompliance, and self defense, are unavoidable aspects of a society that wishes to maintain its freedoms. There is no way around it. If you are not willing to stick your neck out and expose yourself to risk, you remove all chance of possible gain. If you are a self proclaimed activist that refuses to sacrifice, that refuses to struggle, then you have failed before you even began. Talk must lead to balanced action. Never thumb your nose at the devil without being ready to trade punches as well, or all is lost.

Rule #4: Stop Waiting For Others To Tell You What To Do

Independent people not only consider and implement the solutions of others, they also work on their own. Complaints abound lately in the Liberty Movement;

“When is someone going to do something!? What are YOU going to do about our predicament!?”

This is the question of a slave, not a free man. A free man asks, “What am I going to do about this predicament? What is MY solution to the problem?” Therein is the key to liberty; decentralized leadership and movements based on fluidity and spontaneity of action, instead of a great mass of people standing around stiffly waiting for orders on high, or a self styled messiah to engineer their world view. As soon as you place your very initiative under the control of others, you have lost the fight. Always consider the solid strategies of intelligent people, and adopt them if they are useful, but do not remain idle because you are too frightened to exert the effort to solve problems bigger than yourself. Spectators only witness history, they do not make history.

Rule #5: Cast Off What Is Unnecessary, Keep What Is Effective

Yes, I stole this rule from Bruce Lee, but it is just as applicable to social movements and economic stability as it is to the martial arts. Invasive debt creation, for instance, is a tool for subversion, and no people forced to bear the burden of liabilities they can never repay is free. Therefore, exorbitant debt must be avoided, or cast off completely.

In our personal lives, how many useless goods do we accumulate on a daily basis, instead of useful items that we may one day desperately need? How much of our life is spent accumulating garbage in order to keep up with “socially acceptable” levels of consumer behavior? How many of us cling to careers we hate in order to service our needless consumption? The ability to prioritize must become a virtue once again, and, we all need to shut off the cable television…

This rule also applies to governments. If a government no longer fulfills its sworn duties to the people, and no longer serves the purposes to which it was originally intended, then it too must be cast off and replaced with one that does serve the people, or, it must be forced to return to its inherent foundations. Today, this kind of talk is often referred to as “extremism”, or insurgency, no matter how correct it might be, which brings us to our next rule…

Rule #6: Ignore Establishment Labels

Tactical name calling is only effective if we actually care what other people think of us. Labels like “homegrown terrorist”, “extremist”, “doomer”, or “conspiracy theorist”, are designed to shame people into self censorship. That is to say, they pigeonhole movements and their participants into categories of public shame, causing said movements to fear social reprisal. They are also meant to forcefully assign “outsider” or “fringe” status to particular political positions in order to marginalize and weaken the resolve of those who hold them. Never mind that almost every powerful and honorable cultural movement in history once started out as “fringe”.

Early in our lives, we are taught that it is far better to be accepted, and to avoid standing out, even at the expense of our individualism. Unfortunately, many adults never outgrow this childish belief, and thus become vulnerable to tactics as absurd as simple ridicule. At bottom, being slandered by a thieving bureaucracy infested with soulless parasites bent on centralization at the expense of innocent human life is a bit laughable (this goes for you too, SPLC). Globalists, along with their media cronies and their think-tank sock puppets, will say ANYTHING to get what they want. Empty words and false labels cannot stop the truth, or a movement driven by the truth.

Rule #7: Cynicism Is The Path To Defeat

It is good to be critical, but not to the point of nihilism. America’s past is riddled with mistakes, bad judgments, horrible crimes, and downright stupidity; that doesn’t mean that the principles on which this country was founded are any less vital. We hear often from cynics that humanity has become too stupid and complacent to do what is right. However, stupidity and complacency are not inherent qualities. That’s an elitist fantasy with no basis in fact. Stupidity and complacency are learned behaviors, and they can be unlearned. What IS inherent is our ability to choose what path we will take. For adherents of liberty, we need only remind people that they have this choice. We can whine and cry all day long about how nobody pays attention and how there is no hope, or, we can exhaust all options before throwing in the proverbial towel. We don’t need to “like” society the way it is, but we do need to recognize the underlying potential of all people to become something much more than what they currently are (I can’t stand blind ignorance either, but I’m certainly not ready to accept it as a fact of American life). Remember, no fight is over until it is over.

Rule #8: True Authority Is Derived From Respect That Is Earned, Not Bought, Or Taken

A corrupt politician is just a criminal conman in a nice suit. A law enforcement officer who refuses to follow Constitutional Law is just a petty little tyrant in a black uniform. An economist who knowingly skews data to fit his own political bias or to serve the political biases of men above him is just a liar or an inept buffoon with an embossed piece of paper from an expensive university. A lab scientist or doctor who flubs experimentation to support the interests of the corporate world rather than the needs of the public is just a quack in a white coat. All too often, though, we find ourselves taking these cretins seriously all because they talk the talk and wear the costume. They are just people, and if they cannot do their jobs honestly, then they are useless people, who deserve our disdain, not our respect. We should never allow such men to wield positions of authority over us.

Rule #9: Take It Personally

When someone tries to steal from you, hurt you, or enslave you, unless you are some kind of nut, you take it pretty personally, right? Why should it be any different when a government commits the same grievances? Americans should be furious over the destruction of their economy, their currency, their infrastructure, and their Constitutional freedoms! They should be enraged over the endless wars overseas that are bankrupting the nation. They should be bellowing to the rooftops over the cooption of their political system by a slimy brood of corporate bankers. Is this “extremist” behavior? Who cares!? If your anger is not visible then it is not worth a damn. Don’t just get active, get emotional! This is about your life, and the lives of those you love. That’s not to say that we should take out our frustrations randomly and haphazardly, but if we can’t at least make known our anger over the misdeeds of government, then what the hell is the point of calling ourselves free?

Rule #10: You Are The First And Last Line Of Defense

Like it our not, this is our job. We have inherited a country on the verge of disaster, and we are tasked with cleaning it up, otherwise, there will be little left to pass on. We do not get to bask in illusory prosperity for the rest of our days. We do not get to feed off the entitlement program trough until we are fat and contented. We are not going to retain our rights without blood, sweat, and tears. We will not be building magical floating cities in the clouds or skyscrapers on Mars.We will NOT be remembered fondly as members of some fantastical “golden era”.

We have been thrust into the muck and the mire. We are being molded as the lost children of an age better forgotten. We have been slapped in the face with a dilemma so volatile and so incredible it may one day be called the greatest crisis of all time. We have drawn the short straw.

This could be viewed as some terrible doom. It could be held as a star crossed act of ferocious fate. We could fall to our knees and lament with despair, overcome with woe at our unbearable lot. But, this would be in violation of rule #3, and nobody wants to be a sobbing pansy. On the contrary, every “bad luck generation” is only so if they refuse to see the great fortune at their fingertips; if they refuse to seize the moment and conquer the giants of their day. The greater the hardship, the greater the enemy, the greater the heroes. We are faced with possibly the most unrelenting antagonists and the most treacherous obstacles in recent memory, or even distant memory. In the same spark of confrontation, we are also presented with unparalleled opportunity to change the course of the world forever. Whether or not we succeed, is entirely up to us.

The Proof of the Futility of Voting

I posted on a couple of other blogs about my feeling that voting for national representatives, Federal politicians, has become an exercise in futility. That it is no longer possible to make a difference in the outcome of our government by exercising the right of franchise. The debt ceiling "compromise" (like compromising your principles, it is never the right or moral thing to do) has shown us to be powerless to elect representatives who will do the right thing.

The victory we thought we had realized in 2010 was a farce. The Tea Party and Republican candidates have thrown away their power to limit spending and the size of government. As Francis Porretto at Eternity Road posted:

"The Republican caucus in the House of Representatives was quite capable of preventing any increase in federal spending and the debt limit. All appropriations bills must originate in the House. There's no Constitutional obligation upon the House to take up a bill passed by the Senate. Therefore, with or without a budget in place, the GOP majority in the House could have prevented this disaster merely by "sitting on its hands" -- i.e., voting down any bill that includes a provision to increase the debt ceiling. As for the budget itself, there's no Constitutional obligation to maintain the funding of any program or government department. Thus, the House alone could have compelled the federal government to live within its means.

It chose not to do so. So much for Republicans' limited-government principles."

We are doomed, people, if we believe we can still work within the system. While I do not advocate starting hostilities, there will come a time in the not-too-distant future when we must resist further encroachment upon our liberty with force. Perhaps singly, in our own homes, or perhaps in concert with others of like mind. Yes, I understand that sounds nasty, radical, the posturing of a "domestic extremist", but as Winston Churchill was quoted saying:

"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves."

Battered Citizen Syndrome

I just came across a web site, thanks to WRSA, at http://daletoons.blogspot.com/2011/05/battered-citizen-syndrome.html. Incredible! Its perfect, especially the sneer and the wife-beater undershirt. All the Lefties and those who voted for a race instead of a leader will continue to make excuses for this sick induhvidual, but the poster tells it as it is. My only complaint it that it stops just short of showing the bloody knuckles of the hand not holding the flowers.

Here is the text that goes along with it:

Battered Citizen Syndrome

There you are, America, lying in the hospital with a broken jaw, a dislocated collar bone and in serious danger of losing your right eye. You told the doctors you fell down the stairs, but tell yourself that Barry's been under a lot of stress lately, and you just wouldn't listen when he told you to shut up. Maybe Barry's right to blame all of his failures on you and your former man. After all, jealousy is a sign of love isn't it? Just last week he killed a rat for you and you didn't show as much gratitude as you could have. He probably won't go off on you again, unless you do something to make him crazy. Oh no, here he comes, and you look a mess. Awww, he brought you roses…and a mean left hook. –Dale

Of course, we know this creature is actually a pussy. I'm sure MicHELLe could easily kick his ass, and probably has, more than once. I kinda wonder: does the Secret Service have orders to ignore it when she slaps him around a little?

Dale's site has another poster, this one of Sarah Palin as a modern day "Rosie the Riveter", imitating Norman Rockwell's painting. It is well-done also. Check them out.

The Anti-Semitic U.N.

Just came across a YouTube video presentation about part of the reason the U.N. is biased against Israel, seeking to de-legitimize them. It displays the hypocrisy of the U.N. in having abusive, oppressive nations leading the Human Rights council, and speaks of the countries which have ganged together to destroy the only viable and truly humanistic democracy in the Middle East, indeed possibly the world, considering the fact that we are becoming more of a socialist oligarchy under the rule of Obama.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7Mupoo1At8&feature=player_embedded (h/t to Double Tapper)

I have read a number of tracts explaining some of the reasons the Jews have been persecuted through the centuries. Does it not move you to wonder, that so many countries and cultures should have tried so hard to either exclude the Jews from their midst, enslave them or completely destroy them? There are those who would claim it is because of something wrong with the Jews themselves, that it is like the body's immune system fighting off an infection, but I shouldn't have to explain to anyone why this is the worst sort of true racism, an evil anti-Semitism which is rotten, putrid with a pathological sickness of its own which it projects onto the Jewish culture and religion.

Don't call me a hypocrite for not being willing to accept Islam as a valid religion - it is merely the fantasy of an ignorant pedophilic madman who discovered a way to subjugate large numbers of other ignorant herdsmen and villagers who needed to be led, willing to accept vague promises of virgins in the after-life if they would only bow down before him, give him their virgin pre-pubescent daughters for his sexual pleasure, and kill anyone he pointed them toward. Of course, it didn't hurt that he was also telling them they could keep whatever women they came across as the spoils of war, to be used as sex slaves and targets for their rage and feelings of inadequacy, "things" which could be beaten without reason or consequence. That really appeals to the Arab mentality (as low as that is), especially when you throw in the permission to use young "beardless" boys as sex objects as well, which many Arabs prefer over the goats and camels many of them had been using prior to Mo making up the pretend religion called Islam.

And for those of you late to the game, don't think I am making any of this up. If you actually read the Quran, the Hadith, and the Sura, and understand the concept of abrogation (http://www.jihadwatch.org/islam-101.html), you will find these statements are true.

Back to the Jews: they are called the Chosen People, chosen by G-d. Were I to believe in G-d myself, I would believe he has chosen them to suffer for that honor. They certainly have, from being Pharoah's slaves, to Rome's oppressed subjects, to the victim's of European disdain and ill-treatment, to the victims of Russian pograms, to beig cast into the ovens of Nazi Germany as well as having been used for horrendous and cruelly pointless medical experiments by "doctors" allied to that regime. They continue to suffer today, as victims of the attacks of muslims and skinheads, and all manner of anti-Semites throughout the world. And as they suffer at the hands of a U.N. which is no more compassionate, fair, balanced or moral than Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, Mao, Milosevic, or any other butcher known to mankind.

Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) once wrote an essay about the Jews, this link being the summation of the essay. He wrote of their endurance, but also of their disproportionate contribution to mankind. I think much of anti-Semitism may simply be an unconscious (or at least unstated) manifestation of the envy felt by lesser members of the human race. However, it may also be true that their inoffensive acceptance of much of what befalls them makes them an easy target, a target that has been chosen time and time again by tyrants throughout history to focus a country's anger upon. A target that would not fight back, and was therefore safe to use to distract a populace from what the tyrant was actually doing to them. If it could be blamed upon the Jews, the anger of the populace would not fall upon the tyrant.

Another facet is the fact that the Jews, being industrious, hard-working and clever, would amass property, fortunes that were the envy of those around them. When kings and governments needed money, they would borrow - often with no intention of paying back - from the Jews. Some would simply confiscate their wealth, condemning the Jews and making up reasons as to why the Jews deserved to be treated in that fashion. How well that has worked through the ages is incredible to me, but it certainly worked for many a king, many a tyrant.

As with any attempt to generalize, you can always point to exceptions, but as a race and as a culture, the Jewish people have never deserved the treatment they have received at the hands of the rest of the world. It is reprehensible for any agency which claims to be formed for the purpose of protecting and nurturing the people of all the countries on earth to savage the State of Israel the way the U. N. has for so many years now. If there were no other reason for ending the U.N., that would be reason enough. It is a nasty conglomeration of self-serving political leaders who decide the fate of their subjects (almost none are true citizens), and who have decided that the Jews must continue to suffer at the hands of their "betters". An organization that prefers the counsel of a creature such as Ahmadinejad - who calls for the physical destruction of Israel and the annihilation of her people - over the open democracy that Israel offers all of her citizens, Arab and Israeli alike, is not an agency worthy of support. Its actions and demands - such as Durban - must be fought against and shown for the ant-Semitic evil that they are.

Humor me

Saw this Dilbert cartoon for Sunday, and I just had to post it. Having been into self-sufficiency for many years, having read many Internet posts concerning the "preps" movement, and having participated in many discussions on various lists and blogs concerning preparations for economic upheaval, social unrest, etc. it struck me as not only pertinent but quite funny in a somewhat disturbing way.

Oh, I'm not disturbed in the manner of those folks who think preparations for difficult times are a sign of paranoia. Those of us who grew up with parents who lived through the Great Depression, those of us who have lived where snowstorms and hurricanes have knocked out electricity for several weeks at a time, or where you couldn't get through the snow to the stores to buy food or other necessities, know that preparing is something you don't have to be a Boy Scout to do. Our families pretty much all had a deep pantry or larder or root cellar where there was enough food stored to carry you through a week or so (at least).

Some years back, when I owned a little 40 acre ranch in Far Northern California ("The State of Jefferson", for those of you familiar with that political division ;-), I had a large root cellar with food and all the sundries you'd rather not have to do without, from toilet paper and fresh toothbrushes to soap and shampoo, to freshly canned garden produce, stored root crops, and apples and pears from our own trees. I had kerosene stored for some Aladdin lamps I owned, as well as some Dietz hurricane lanterns and candles, of course. I had a large diesel fuel tank and one for gasoline. I had more standing dead wood and snags than I could burn in two years, plus about 25 acres of forest. Two springs fed an underground cistern and an above ground tank, with a solar-powered ultraviolet system with several filters for purification. All sorts of power and hand tools for wood-cutting, wood-working, welding and fabrication, auto and farm equipment maintenance, etc.

My wife and I had six Toggenburg milk goats, 37 Rhode Island Red chickens, a team of Shire draft horses, along with another ten assorted drafts and warm-blood crosses. Loved that sweet, fresh milk and the various cheeses we made from it, along with the chicken and eggs. Could have eaten chevon or cabrito, but never needed to, although it was available should that have changed. Also put in a separate orchard with sixteen different varieties of antique apple cultivars. We skidded timber with the horses, and had the equipment to plow and harrow if needed, as well as wagons for cargo and a buckboard for travel.

Having been a shooter, reloader, and former law enforcement (worked for both CHP and as a reserve officer in the small town we lived outside of), I also was well prepared with various firearms, ammunition, components, and the ability to combine various items into other improvised devices were that to prove desirable. Of course, I didn't neglect the archery aspect, either, with a PSE compound and a Barnett crossbow. Having worked in emergency medicine, I had a fairly good minor surgical setup, an adequate supply of sutures, bandaging material, gloves, antiseptics and medicines, as well as some training to go along with them. All of this was rounded out with a library of over 1200 volumes, many reference works, how-to books (e.g., Where There Is No Doctor, books on construction, medicine, chemistry, animal husbandry, farming and gardening, art, music, along with the Harvard Classics, a lot of good novels, science fiction, etc., etc.)

Ah, fond memories. While I found it necessary - and desirable - to walk away from much of that infrastructure when I got divorced, I don't list these things to brag, but to indicate that I do have a bit of a notion of what constitutes decent preparation. I still maintain many of the items spoken of that were of a more portable nature than Shire draft horses and Toggenburg goats :-) I have maintained the skills to utilize all of that plus more training I picked up since (R.N. degree and working on the single-engine, land add-on to my commercial rotorcraft license.)

On one web site, I got into a discussion with a young man who was ranting about how useless all of us "old folks" are, what a drain on society we have proven to be with our Social Security and Medicare, and I tried to educate the cretin as to the desirability of using us old codgers as a resource for holding things together and perhaps even assisting in rebuilding civilization if TS ever HTF. There are a lot of us out there with various skills that will be useful, perhaps even vital. He was insistent that society needed to get rid of us, and stabilize economically once we weren't draining the country's coffers. I informed him that any sensible community would rather have trained and experienced old folks like us than some ignorant, day-trading punk with a BMW and a large bank account.

All of this - and I hope I haven't bored you too badly yet - is in service of this Dilbert cartoon. On one of the email lists I was on for some years, while discussing preparations for possible problems during Y2K, several young men spoke of how they wouldn't let their families starve and suffer, even though they had made no preparations themselves. Like "Alice" in the Dilbert strip, they decided they would go "shopping" at the homes of farmers and those of us who had spent our money, time, and sweat making preparations for our own families and friends. They saw nothing wrong with the notion of taking what they felt their families needed by force, from those of us who had used our hard-earned wages to prepare instead of partying, or buying jet skis, fast cars, or more expensive homes. Talk about your grasshoppers and ants!

Scott Adams may have been poking a bit of fun at preppers, or perhaps at those Yuppie types who think organic food and macrobiotics and a few batteries and flashlights constitute preparation. He is such a clever fellow, I am hoping Scott has indeed worked the equation all the way through and is not only sufficiently armed, but perhaps also allied with some like-minded friends who will watch each others' backs if and when it becomes necessary. Because if TS ever does HTF, there will be millions who will feel ever so justified in taking what you have worked hard to provide.

Including FEMA, which is covered by an Executive Order which authorizes it to take any food, equipment, fuel, livestock, vehicles or other property anyone possesses, to use as it sees fit. That includes giving it to the trash coming out of the urban areas as we saw post-Katrina. I'm no talking needy elderly or disabled people, single moms who have been trying to work and keep things together, but all of those folks smoking two or three packs of cigarettes, two or three six-packs of beer, and carrying all of the large screen TVs, liquor, drugs, or anything else they can steal on their way outside of town. The ones who will start screaming the loudest when there is no place to get their free rent, free commodities, food stamps, and all of the other entitlements they have been receiving for so long, and have been told is their due. The folks who FEMA gave credit cards which were used for liquor, drugs, prostitutes, iPods, X-boxes, and damn near everything except what they were meant to be used for.

So, laugh as I did at Dilbert and Alice, but realize it constitutes a rather large tongue in a fairly small cheek. We can hope those preparations will never be needed (although they can always be used anyway, so no loss there), but the times are such that I certainly wouldn't bet on it not happening. Consequently, I prefer to remain not only semper paratus, but also semper armatus.
